Carolina Hideaway® Best Bets

Private Chef who will cook at the Hideaway

Ken Rizzo is the “Charlotte Chef.” For about $50 per person, Ken will come prepare a wonderful meal for you. It’s quite a show, a lot of fun and the food is fantastic. For the price, you get high-end restaurant quality food and presentation. You pick the menu and he will typically prepare two entrees and side dishes. Ken’s from NY, and is a showman. He sets up, cooks, cleans up, etc.—and you’ll typically have food leftover for lunch the next day. This will definitely be one of the highlights of your vacation. Ken Can be reached at 704-877-CHEF (2433), www.CharlotteChef.com or chefken@charlottechef.com.

Restaurants

The Landings (at Lake Norman Motel)
This is our favorite “dive” restaurant on the water. It’s basically sandwiches of all kinds, fajitas, and their famous “Oh My Cod” fish sandwich. You’ll get lots of local flavor here … including a Tiki Bar, Carolina Blonde Beer on Tap, great wings, $1.50 Coronas on Tuesdays, video games and kids meals in Frisbees for the kids, and live music on Friday and Saturday nights.  Fine dining it is not. It is a lot of fun though. They also deliver pizza. It’s solid but one of the few places that we have found that delivers. (828-478-2817)

Directions from the house by boat: Go right (south) for about 3 miles in the main channel. Turn right at mile marker X? when you see the condos on the right. Go toward the condos and go under the bridge on the left side. Take a right under the bridge and you’ll be there in 1 minute.

Directions from house by car: Left onto Island Point. Left on to Sherrills Ford Road. Right on Slanting Bridge Road. Go 3 or four miles. It’s behind the Lake Norman Motel (an old single story motel on Slanting Bridge). Walk around on the left side.

The Blue Parrot
Across the main channel … just north of the 150 bridge. Good food. Cold beer. Local flavor. Live music on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. They also sell gas for boats.

Tony’s Pizza (no delivery)
Our favorite pizza in NC. It’s NY style pizza with a large pizza so big they need to fold over the edges to fit it in the box. They don’t deliver and it’s very “light” on ambiance but a great carry-out option to take back to the Hideaway. It’s great pizza !!  (704) 658-1926.

Directions from house: Left onto Island Point. Left on to Sherrills Ford Road. Left on 150. Go 4-5 miles and look for the Target plaza on the left side. It’s across from Dick’s Sporting goods in the small strip mall.

Giovanni’s Pizza and Pasta (pizza and Italian food delivered)
Pizza, pasta, calzones, soup, salads, wings, subs, etc … all delivered to the Hideaway.   The restaurant itself is a little place in a strip mall …but it’s a nice little place … will definitely meet (or beat) your expectations for environment and food. (704-966-0403)

Midway Boathouse Grill
The perfect kayak trip …for breakfast on the water. Go south (right) from the house, under the 150 bridge, take a right and go toward the marina. A 10-minute kayak ride. A 5-minute boat ride. You’ll see biscuits and gravy, grits, eggs, etc, and fishermen in camo’s. You won’t see much fresh fruit. Best for breakfast. Also has a full bar now. The

Birkdale is a trendy shopping/dining/living area in Huntersville. You’ll find stores like White House/Black Market, American Eagle and Cold Stone Creamery there. It’s off of exit 25 on I77. Go west on Sam Furr Road for ½ mile.   www.birkdalevillage.net

Ice Cream

Bruester’s
The ice cream is great, fresh in all kinds of interesting flavors that change every visit. The portions are huge so be prepared when you order. You’ll love it.

Directions from house: Left onto Island Point. Left on to Sherrills Ford Road. Left on 150. Go 4-5 miles and look for the Target plaza on the left side. Take a right at the 1st light BEYOND Target and it will be a half a block up.

It’s not a “local” place but the bagels are great. Lots of fresh bread options too. If your kids haven’t had the Cinnamon Crunch bagel, they’re in for a treat.

Directions from house: Left onto Island Point. Left on to Sherrills Ford Road. Left on 150. Go 4-5 miles and look for the Target plaza on the left side. It’s just beyond that on the right side in a plaza with Starbucks.

Grocery Shopping

Harris Teeter
Brand new on Rt 150 toward Mooresville. Very nice. Very good regional chain.  118 Argus Lane, The Village at Byers Creek, Mooresville, NC 28117

Publix
Another great regional chain. 631 Brawley School Rd, Mooresville, NC 28117.

The selection is much better and it’s only a mile further away. Location: Route 150 Mooresville (east of 77 on Rt 150)

Boat Rental

We have a boat rental place that we like a lot. The boats are nice and clean, pricing is good. They are close and they deliver and pick up your boat. Lake Effects at 980-395-3980. They know the Hideaway well and have deliver to us regularly. Their email is info@lakeeffectsboatrentals.com. John or Walt will take good care of you. Make sure you tell them that you’re staying at the Hideaway. If not, let me know!

Fishing Guides

I haven’t ever used a guide, but these two groups come highly recommended. Please let me know if you use either of them! www.tyoneon.net or www.fishonlkn.com

Public Landing (for boat launch)

Pinnacle Shores
Very close to the house by water. It is right next to the Blue Parrot Restaurant in Mooresville, just off  Route 150. (Restaurant address is169 Pinnacle Lane, Mooresville NC 28117). If you put your boat in here, take a right when you enter the main channel and our house is ¼ mile up on the right. (If you put your boat in before you check in to the house, please note that the boathouse will be locked so you will not be able to access the boathouse from the dock until you have opened the lock box). You will be able to dock.

Other Fun for Kids

Miniature Golf and Bumper Boats at Queen’s Landing Two mini golf courses and bumper boat rides. On Rt 150 on the way to Mooreville.

Tennis

At Bandys High School. Behind the school. Take Island Pointe out to Sherrills Ford Road. Take a RIGHT. Go about 4 miles – to your 2nd gas station, turn left (look for sign to high school). Go 2 miles. HS is on the right. They have nice tennis courts and a track around back. They also have old unplayable courts near the side of the school. The new courts are in back.

Golf

Verdict Ridge
Very nice. Close. If you are a high handicapper, you’ll find it difficult. It’s in a golf development but the houses are not close to the fairway.

Rock Barn
Nicest public course in area. Exceptional (and priced accordingly).

Fox Den
Low price. Fun course. Nothing fancy here, but a good golf experience and not difficult to get on the course

Others
There are a range of other courses in the area, but I haven’t played them (yet) so can’t give you any comment on them. If you play them and would give me a review of them, I will pass it along.
